Making a garden pond: what you need to know

The garden pond can be an extremely decorative element, a really pleasant and suggestive way to embellish your outdoor spaces.

The pond, in reality, should not be understood as a mere decoration: it can in fact become the “home” of plants and fish, therefore living beings, consequently its realization involves a responsibility that must be taken on with conviction, as well as with a good dose of passion.

What are the main “steps” to consider to build a pond? Let’s find out right away.

The construction of the structure of the pond

First of all, the pond must be created from a structural point of view, and from this point of view the solutions are different.

You can buy a special plastic tub by installing it underground, there are many different variants available on the market, however any other container that is sufficiently large and adequately shaped can become a pond: a large vase, for example, or even an old tub. abandoned bathroom!

After installing the structure of the pond, perhaps embellishing it with the placement of stones and other decorative elements, it is necessary to provide for the technical aspects.

The installation of an appropriate filter

In order for a pond, or even an aquarium, to “work” correctly, it is necessary to install a filter equipped with its pump : this is important to ensure that the water is always in circulation and that the filter “captures” all the impurities and harmful microorganisms produced by fish.

There are many types of filter on the market, and for a pond the most functional one certainly corresponds to the so-called external filter; It is very important to make sure that the filter chosen is suitable for the quantity of liters of the pond, as it is always clearly specified by the manufacturers.

Filling the pond

When the filter is also installed (attention: the filter must never be operated empty!) It is possible to fill the pond with water, and this is certainly the most impactful moment of the whole process, the instant in which this beautiful creation takes shape.

Only when the tank is full can the filters be activated, which will thus begin to work, and before inserting aquatic plants and fish it is advisable to wait some time, approximately a couple of weeks.

At this stage it is also useful to get a bioconditioner, inserting the right quantities of product into the water. What is it about?

The use of the water conditioner

All “outdoor” pools of water must be properly treated: just as those who have a swimming pool buy specific chemical products from specialized e-commerce, such as anti-algae, even in a pond substances must be poured liquid with specific functions.

The water conditioner is nothing more than a biological liquid that makes water more pleasant to fish, favoring the creation of an absolutely natural biotope.

The management of the pond

When the pond will host plants and fish it will be necessary to take care of its management .

Checking its condition on a daily basis is certainly a good practice, moreover, you have to feed the fish every day .

With longer time intervals, for example every 2 weeks or once a month, you can proceed with simple cleaning operations, perhaps eliminating leaves and foreign bodies that can deposit on the water or dedicating specific attention to the plants; It is also very important to provide, with the same frequency, a scrupulous cleaning of the filters and the relative materials (sponges, cannolocchi, activated carbon and anything else present).

A real “gem” for your garden

Having a garden pond is really a beautiful thing: your outdoor spaces can become much more fascinating and, beyond this, you can devote yourself to a pleasant, relaxing and fulfilling hobby .

The management of a pond is not an extremely burdensome commitment but as seen some small precautions are necessary, just as they would be necessary, on the other hand, to raise any other type of pet.
